Monument and History. On the Problems of Conservation and Protection of Monuments in the 19th century
Ed. Piotr Kosiewski
The ‘Monument and History’ anthology reveals how views on the protection of monuments were shaped in the 19th century, with small excursions into the previous and next centuries. This is a story about architecture, especially Gothic architecture, because it aroused the greatest emotions among both 'romantics' and 'pragmatists'. In its extreme forms, it is a dispute between those who assumed the possibility of radical reconstruction of part of the monument from very scarce material, and those who were willing to accept the smallest, even the most trivial stylistic layers. However, between these poles there is a whole range of intermediate attitudes, and some of them make truly historical compromises that can still inspire conservators today. This book is for them, but also for art historians, historians, archaeologists and students of these disciplines, which may also reach people of other professions. The series devoted to the problems of monument protection also includes three other collections of texts by outstanding authors whose views have significantly influenced the contemporary practice of heritage management: ‘Around the Wawel’, ‘Kazimierz Renewed’ and ‘Alois Riegl, Georg Dehio and the Cult of Monuments’.
